Sage (Salvia officinalis)
The true sage (Salvia officinalis) is a species of plant from the genus Sage (Salvia). This evergreen spice and medicinal plant originates from the Mediterranean region, but is now widespread throughout Europe. Sage grows as a half-shrub and reaches heights of up to 80 centimetres. All its plant parts have a strong aromatic scent.
Sage has a strong cleansing effect and was formerly used to incense sickrooms because of its antiseptic effect. This plant was also said to drive away demons and spirits and attract good luck in all endeavours. Sage also promotes meditation as it makes thoughts calm and clear.
